# How to track time for a client

Time entries you create on the [Timer page](https://support.toggl.com/en-us/article/the-timer-page-lklv1h) can be directly associated with a project or task. However, to connect your time to a client you must make a connection through a project. Linking time directly with a client (without a project) isn't possible.

### Tracking time for a specific client

1. Open the [Projects page](https://track.toggl.com/projects) and create a project. Visit [this article](https://support.toggl.com/en-us/article/creating-projects-jrbd27) for step-by-step instructions.
2. In the "Create new project" popup, click on the "Client" field and either choose an existing client or click on the "Add new client" button to create a new one.
3. Visit the Timer page and start the timer. Click on the Projects button and select the project-client pair you just created.
4. Your time will now be connected to both the project and the client.

**Keep in mind**

* If you don't have a need for both projects and clients add your clients as projects into Toggl Track. Visit the [data structure article](https://support.toggl.com/en-us/article/data-structure-in-toggl-track-oko9r9) for more details about this.
* You may have multiple projects with the same name. The only condition is that they are associated with different clients.
