Old Toggl Desktop

Currently, there are two types of Toggl Desktop available, a newer version that we recommend, and an older version of the app from when Toggl was still young.

The old Toggl desktop is still available, but note that it is no longer in development so there will be no updates or improvements on this. You can download it using these direct links:

Settings

Toggl Desktop has several settings that you can configure. To open the settings window, right-click (or cmd-click on a Mac) on the system tray icon (dock icon on a Mac) and select "Settings":

Toggl Desktop features both Nano and Classic timers and you can choose between the two in the "Timer" tab of the settings window:

There is also Autopilot settings tab where you can enable/disable the Autopilot and also allow uploading anonymous statistics to help improve it. Find out more about. Toggl Autopilot

Nano Timer

Nano is lightweight and smaller in dimensions than the Classic timer (below). It also presents tasks in a chronological view rather than by project.

Tracking time

To track time click on the plus-icon on the top-right of the screen and a new time entry will be created.

The picture below is the task view of Nano. It shows the current time entry. You can see the task view when you click on a time entry in the list above.

Editing and deleting time entries

This is done in the time entry list view. Mouse over the time entry you want to modify and your options will appear. Click on edit to change its duration, description, project, etc or on delete if you no longer need it.

Recurring time entries

There are two ways to handle recurring time entries: using the autocomplete functionality in the description field or the "Continue today" feature.

When you create a new time entry and start typing a description for it, Nano will suggest some past time entry descriptions. Click on the suitable one to quickly select a description and a project that you have used earlier.

Another way to repeat a time entry you have tracked recently is to use the "Continue today" feature. When you open a time entry that was tracked before today, you'll notice the "Continue today" link laid over the start/stop button. Clicking on it will create a new time entry with the same description and project added already.

Embedding timer Nano

To add the Nano timer to your intranet or some other web page, add the following code to the page:

<iframe src="http://www.toggl.com/nano" style="width:175px;height:320px;border:none;"></iframe>

Classic Timer

The Classic timer displayes entries in a project-listing view:

Tracking time

In the timer, your active projects are displayed in bold. Under each project there are its time entries. Today's time entries are black and past entries are gray. The currently running time entry has a light blue background.

Click on the plus image on the right side of a project name to create a new time entry under this project with today's date;

Click on a past time entry to create a new one with the same name and under the same project (essentially tracking recurring time entries).

If a task is being tracked, it will be shown in the timer header:

There is a button to start/stop it, to toggle its billing options, change the duration, description, date, time, project and tags.

You can also add past time entries by just creating a new task and changing its date.

Deleting time entries

You can delete a task when you hover over an entry and click the trash bin icon.

Search bar

To find a project/time entry quickly from the timer list, start typing its name into the search bar and the timer will display only those projects/time entries which match the search criteria.

Embedding the timer

To add the Classic timer to your intranet or some other web page, add the following code to the page:

When the old Desktop crashes:

There a two different symptoms:

  1. The application hangs with the message "Please wait while we check if you are already logged in". Fortunately, this problem has a workaround:

    • Close/force quit the application.

    • Delete the cache folder, usually located at: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Apprise\Toggl Desktop\cache on Windows, ~/Library/cache/Apprise on Mac OS or ~/.cache/Apprise/Toggl Desktop on Linux.

    • Restart the application.

    • Uncheck Autopilot checkbox at the bottom (Win and Mac apps only).

  2. The application does not start at all and gives a runtime error message. Unfortunately this problem has no workaround and that desktop version will not work for you at all. Please download the new version to use that instead.

Working behind a Proxy

If you work behind a proxy server you have to configure proxy settings from the Settings menu's Proxy tab:

td_settings_proxy.png

As you can see, you can enable proxy settings and input the information that is needed to use Toggl Desktop behind a proxy server. If you don't use a username and password you can leave those fields blank.

Autopilot

Autopilot is an extension to Toggl Desktop to make your tracking even more efficient. It will study your behaviour by memorizing the projects you are tracking and the applications that are in focus while tracking. After a short study period, it can give you suggestions on what project to track, based on the application currently in focus.

autopilot_suggestion.png

The Autopilot is most useful when you have a tendency to forget switching off the timer when finishing a task. It will also help you catch all the seconds when your work time is very fragmented across different projects.

An example:

If you are tracking a task in project A and open a window that you used when tracking a different project, let’s say B, then Toggl Desktop will suggest you to track project B. You can ignore the popup or agree with the suggestion and Toggl Desktop will automatically start tracking on project B.

A second one. You are currently not tracking time and are chatting with your friend James over Skype. Later you start working on a project and start the timer. Then, in the middle of everything, James starts chatting with you again. The Autopilot will catch that and suggest you to stop the timer since it has learned that chatting with James does not need timing. When you click on the suggestion then Toggl Desktop will stop timing the current task.

Helping it learn

You can help Autopilot in its guesswork by approving or disapproving its suggestions. It can be done by simply clicking "Correct" or "Wrong" in the timer when a suggestion event occurs.

autopilot_suggestion_correct_wrong.png

How to enable or disable it?

You can turn the Autopilot on and off by checking or unchecking the "Autopilot enabled" checkbox in the footer of the timer.

autopilot_enable_disable.png

Privacy

Autopilot will collect information about the titles of the applications you use but it does NOT send the information anywhere. All the data collected will stay only in your computer under your user account.

Troubleshooting

It can happen that you accidentally track time under project A when you are actually working on project B. If that happens then the Autopilot will learn wrong information about your projects. That could result in the Autopilot later suggesting you to track a completely wrong project. However, there is no need to worry. The best thing to do is to ignore the false alarms and make sure that you are tracking the right projects. The Autopilot will constantly learn new information about your projects and forget old (or wrong) information. So, after a short while, the Autopilot will stop suggesting to track the wrong project and replace the suggestions with correct ones.
